Welcome to my Harlequin Romance page __________________________
The line retailed in the UK as Mills & Boon Romance And in Australia as Harlequin Sweet __________________________
This is where I try to answer some of the Frequently Asked Questions about the line and where you can search for my books by line name.
__________________________
What is Harlequin Romance?
Harlequin Romance
is, some would argue, the line that started it all. Or at least a descendent of
it. Born of the Mills & Boon offices i
When I first sold to the line in 2002 it was known as Mills & Boon Tender in the UK and Ireland (I sold in under the Tango label within that line) and I had no idea of the history behind the line. Or that giants of the genre such as Violet Winspear, Anne Mather and Betty Neels had started out there. But my goodness what a legacy!!!
In September of 2006 the line merged with Silhouette Romance, remaining Harlequin Romance in the USA & Canada, Harlequin Sweet in Australia & New Zealand and changing to Mills & Boon Romance in the UK & Ireland. It now has simultaneous release dates in the UK and the USA...
But isn't it that old fashioned line with no sex?
Erm. Not so much as it happens. But it's t
Do they contain graphic sex scenes - no, they don't. But they do regularly have heightened sexual tension and enough sensuality for your imagination to fill in the *blanks* when the scene 'fades to black'. And what this means is that all the word-count that can get eaten up by describing what-went-where can be filled with some wonderful character arcs and storylines and settings!
And the line is as diverse as the number of
fantabulo
Yes, there are still the reader 'fantasy favourites' of Sheikh's and Duke's and Prince's and Millionaire's - but every single book is tackled with a very different approach to the ones used in the 70's, 80's and even the 90's. C'mon! You seriously think a line that can't move with the times and talk to today's women would have survived as long as this one has???
And how can you know what flavour of ice cream you might have ended up loving if you hadn't sampled a few first, huh? Go on - be brave - if you're not already a fan try a few Harlequin Romances. You might just surprise yourself... I can recommend a few Trish Wylie ones if that helps any...
Where are the writer's from?
And yes, before you all email me about this one too, I'll say it yet again - they ARE ALWAYS looking for new authors for this and every other line edited out of the Mills & Boon London offices. Write a fabulous story and you too could be a Harlequin Romance author!
What is the line looking for from writer's? The books are 50 - 55,000 words long and
according to the
Guidelines on "These might be short romances at 50-55000 words, but they’re not short on story – just highly focused on the central relationship! The reader experiences that amazing “rush” via the heroine - the reader lives through the romance through the heroine. Therefore, the heroine is vital – she must be warm, easy to like and engage with. Of course, the hero takes centre stage with the heroine – and hero point of view is welcomed to give his character depth and credibility. He’s always strong and charismatic, successful in his own way and aspirational – a man you’d want to be with! He can be an alpha male, but like the heroine, his character is always highly developed, three-dimensional and convincing for 21st Century readers." Got that? Off you hop to the keyboard then... Where can you find more Harlequin Romance Authors?
All of the authors have websites where you can find out more about them and their books for Harlequin Romance. And you can find many of them on my Links Page.
They also have a joint site here.
What's the best thing about Harlequin Romance?
Can I say the men
again???
What do you mean typical Trish?! I can't help it when they're such fun to write. But the best thing about Harlequin Romance has to be the emotional satisfaction it leaves you with. I once described the difference between Harlequin Romance and Mills & Boon Modern Heat (the two lines I write for) as being the former had the ahhhh factor while the latter had oohhh factor - and I still stand by that. When you close the cover on a Harlequin Romance it leaves you with a strong sense of hope that love can still exist in the world - the people genuinely become that real to you. And I kinda love that...
Though if you don't fall in love with the hero a little by the end of the book then there's something wrong - so what I said about the men still holds true... __________________________
